eARC Review: Brighter Than the Sun (Charley Davidson #8.5) by Darynda Jones

Synopsis:

All his life, Reyes Alexander Farrow has suffered the torments of the damned. Only one thing has given him hope: the woman who radiates a light that no mortals can see; a light that only the departed can see...

Told from his point of view, BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN chronicles the first time Reyes ever encountered Charley, and how their relationship has been the one thing that can either save him or doom him.

My Review:

“I don’t understand people. They smile when they are mad. They hug people they hate. They steal from people they genuinely love. And they are jealous of babies.”

This novella, from Reyes s POV has been greatly anticipated and it was well worth the wait. After little glimpses into Reyes s mind from the last couple of books, now we get his POV from nearly the beginning of everything. My heart broke a thousand times while reading this and I simply cant believe that a person, even one as strong as Reyes, survived all of the depraved and evil things that happened to him. And in the middle of all this misery, he still is there for Charley, always helping and protecting her even though for the longets time he thought she was a figment of his imagination, an escape from the pain.
This novella is precious, I think to every fan of this series and of the love between Reyes and Charley. We get glimpses into her life from her birth, to her "relationship" with Denise, some alarming things about uncle Bob ( I really cant believe it :( ), and the most important relationships in this novella, that of Reyes and Kim, and Reyes and Amador.
I think everyone that loves Charley and Reyes should read this, it was hard to read but worth every tear.

“It’s the other things he does, the things that crush me on the inside, that make me want to die. I would have if not for Dutch’s light. I would be dead. I know it. I wish it were real. I wish she were real. She’s getting older and more beautiful with each passing day, and even though she’s a figment of my fucked-up imagination, I love her. To the very depths of my soul.”
